Another Day, Another Adventure

Today I put my feet in the Mediterranean Sea for the first time. This was a big moment for me. There is something so exciting and unique about touching or entering a place for the first time. I still remember the first time I stepped into the Atlantic Ocean, and I'm sure I'll remember the first time I stepped in the Mediterranean for many years as well.

Once again, it was a beautiful day in Athens. We ended up heading to the beach after a tour of the National Archaeological Museum (which was fantastic, by the way). Dr. Finitsis led us to the tram station, helped us purchase tickets and then sent us on our way. The ride to the beach was cramped, but the experience was exciting nonetheless. The tram was full of average Greeks going about on their Saturday business. When we finally got to the sea, our group sat on the beach for a while soaking it all in. The weather was fairly warm, and there were even some people swimming in the water. Although I certainly was not going to jump in and join them, it was still great to take off my shoes and put my feet in the water. Coming from Oregon, it's always a shock when you wade into ocean water that isn't -500 °F. The water felt wonderful, and the sun was even better.

Next, our group decided to stop at a seaside restaurant for a snack. Lunch hadn't been that many hours ago, so we decided to be unconventional and order dessert before dinner. Then it was back on the tram to the center of Athens.

We ended our day in the best way we possibly could. Our group of 9 headed to a neighborhood full of restaurants and bars at the base of the Acropolis. We sat for several hours in sidewalk chairs chatting, laughing, eating and drinking. It was a wonderful, perfectly Greek way to finish off a busy day. Tomorrow we head back to the Acropolis, and we will finally have our chance to explore the Parthenon. I've been waiting for this day ever since we arrived in Greece, so stay tuned because I know I'll have plenty to talk about and show you tomorrow!
