Athens in the Rain

Today was my first experience with Athens rain. The morning started out well enough, warm and a little overcast. However, when we left class around two an all-out downpour was bombarding the streets of Athens. We scurried back to our apartments as quickly as possible (isn't that pathetic? One week out of the Northwest and I've already developed a fear of the rain), and I decided to stay inside for the rest of the afternoon. I was in desperate need of sleep after a late night the day before, and the rain provided the perfect excuse to stay in my room and take a nap.

But life in Athens doesn't stop just because of the rain. Later that evening, our class set out on another walk through the city. The weather was still drizzly, but it wasn't terrible. We made our way up a steep hillside until we reached the bottom of a funicular that we rode all the way to the top of the hill. The view on the top was absolutely spectacular. The mist and clouds blurred the city lights and made Athens look incredible. The Acropolis glowed brightly on its hill across the city. We spent a fair amount of time milling around and trying to snap decent photos in the dark. Then we headed to a small restaurant also located on top of the hill. The entire class sat down in comfortable chairs and couches and ordered coffee and dessert. It was a relaxing way to end the day.

Tomorrow we will make the three hour journey to Delphi. I've heard a lot about Delphi from high school english classes, and I can't wait to see the real site. I will be sure to post some photos tomorrow night from our day!
