Bad Romance

What exactly is a bad romance? Well, "Bad Romance" is a song by the pop icon Lady Gaga, but you already knew that. I really have no idea what she is saying when she is singing about a bad romance. Something along the lines of she wants her lovers love and revenge and doesn't want to be friends. What in the heck does that mean?Well I really do know what it means but that's besides the point. I know that artists use devices and weird ways of getting their point across but I don't think that she has one in this case. Now let me tell you something else. We read the story out of the the "deleted scenes" of the bible that was all about the juicy romance. I guess that the same things that happen now happen then... or else we wouldn't be here.

What happened was the story of Aseneth and Joseph (for all you movie buffs out there the same Joseph was depicted in DreamWorks "Joseph King of Dreams" in 2000) where the marriage of the two different people from different races happened. Joseph was the Jew that had been living in Egypt and Aseneth was a girl of Egyptian royalty that wanted to convert to the Jewish ways after hearing of this incredible man. This I have seen many times in relationships that I have come into contact with; one party is influenced by the other for the good or the bad. When the influence happens there is either a really good fairy tale ending or the ending is anything but fairytale. In the end it turns out that her father the king actually does let him marry her daughter. I was quite surprised at this to happen. Joseph was a stand out figure in the story as a perfect Egyptian that also a Jew. I was thinking that even though the father loved Joseph he would object because of their differences.

It is funny to look at a story like this that happened in biblical times; a story of a mixed marriage. We in the 20th century and beyond are still dealing with stereotypes and prejudices on mixed marriages. I know that if you look at the mass of marriages back in those times these weren't that common but the theme of the story is one that still runs deep. It seems that we might have taken one step forwards and two steps back when this story comes to light.
