Bad Romance

Karma finally caught up with me. In all the times I have been lucky enough to travel, I have never gotten sick whatsoever. I have been blessed with an iron stomach and a pretty solid immune system, meaning that generally if I do get sick it takes me about three days to power through it. I remember watching my friends get sick in the most inconvenient places, missing fun activities and fabulous meals while I remained unaffected. Almost immediately in Greece, I came down with a fever that I held for more or less four days before it dissipated. I thought to myself, “Well, it had to happen at some point in time, at least it wrapped up quickly.” My favored method for efficiently dispatching sickness is by drinking tons of water. I started off on the first day drinking about four liters, the next six, until at the climax 8 liters. Back home, this works really well for me. It flushes the system and keeps me hydrated through the worst bouts. Here in Greece, it had the same wonderful effect, but with a catch. As we wandered the crowded streets of Athens I would continually be searching for a public bathroom. Bathrooms are strangely scarce here, sometimes not even present in restaurants and even costing a small fee. Every time we would go on a long walk, it seemed that I would forget my predicament and end up contemplating dipping into the National Gardens to answer the call of nature. Every night after a dinner of delicious Greek cheese and ten glasses of water I would end up trotting ahead of the group for fear that I would have to duck out somewhere. Luckily for me, the system appeared to work and I got better. Now as we approach the end of our trip I have come down with a head cold and a cough. I sit here at my computer, my third Nalgene of water next to me contemplating my predicament. I know that I probably deserve this sickness for staying up too late wandering the streets of Rhodes with my classmates and I am ok with that. The thing that scares me is that I know tomorrow we have a moderately long bus ride to that ancient city of Lindos, and there will probably not be a rest stop along the way.
