Travelling 6,000 miles from home you are bound to find some differences in culture and custom. Coming from PLU to my current location in Athens is a completely new experience. The food is different, the language is different (at least a majority of the time), and the behavior is different. And so far I like it all. Greek coffee is fantastic and the food is delicious. Not knowing what all of the advertisements are saying is nice, although the ones I can read don't always make sense. And most importantly, everyone I have met up to this point has been really nice people.
At home I look out my bedroom window at Tinglestad gated lot (not a pretty sight), here I look out at a beautiful church and a lively city (of course the church view is rather fortunate). Another big difference between here and home is the hours people keep. The cafes and restaurants are open much later in Athens. It is a large city and people don't go out until much later at night than people back home. At two in the morning I was able to walk down the street and see many places to buy delicious smelling goodies.
While I see many differences between what I am familiar with and Athens, I really like those differences. I am definitely still in the honeymoon phase of visiting a new place. I doubt I will move on from that phase before returning to PLU, but I am certain that at some point I will long for the comfort and familiarity of the Pacific Northwest and a delicious java chip Frappuccino from the local Starbucks.
