Our class discussion today really got me thinking about the body and soul. What really stuck with me were the speeches of each of the seven brothers before being put to death; all the brothers stated that their bodies could be maimed and tortured but their soul could never be harmed. This got me thinking about a kind of opposite perspective. When I think about body and soul (speaking in terms of life on earth, not talking about another divine world) I think that the body can be harmed but it heals but the sould takes much harder hits as far as wounds. The soul has to endure the emotions that life throws at us: sorrow, anger, abuse. I feel as though these things cause greater damage than a scrape, cut or break. The emotions that your soul endures stick with you for months, years or even an entire lifetime. They don't go away in a day or a week and sometimes have very serious repercussions (i.e. therapy, further abuse). When you then turn this to include the divine world as well the perspective turns to agree with the brothers, the body will perish but the soul will live on forever. The body can only survive here on earth but the soul can survive farther into the world of the divine and it may face more hardships here on earth but it gets to continue on.
