In the last few days death has been a prominent subject through our class. We watched "Zorba the Greek", which showed some of the Greek culture and how death affected some of the characters. As well as reading third Maccabees in class, which told the tail of the 7 sons and their mother wisdom, and their tragic deaths. I have seen death in my life and i feel as though i understand it is part of life. But something that was said in "Zorba the Greek" really hit home for me. Not only because it was a strong statement, but because it put into perspective some of my family members beliefs.
At one point in the movie, after Zorba's Boobalina has passed. As they leave the building, the english man asks if she she have a proper burial or if they (Zorba and this english man) should do anything. Zorba replies "she is dead, there is nothing left to do." This statement really put some perspective for me. I feel that after a person dies there soul leaves there body and goes where it needs to go. The body is the body... it is dead. What matters is the soul that has left the body and goes where it is predetermined, judged, roams or goes in where ever you believe it goes.
To me, the body and soul are one thing when life is present. But after life the soul goes about it's business.
