Who would you classify as a child of light? or of darkness? This question has an infinite number of possibilities that will change with every person you ask. One person may see someone as a child of light for their courageous deeds and another may see them as a child of darkness for those same actions. When I think about this I think about the story of Judith; the Israelites thought of her as a child of light, saving her people and having the willingness to sacrifice herself to do so. On the other hand King Nebuchanezzer and his people probably thought of her as a child of darkness for killing and humiliating their army's general. Now who was right and who was wrong in this story is subjective but I think a lot of people tend to side with Judith and would say the King is wrong. Personal opinions are not why I'm trying to point out in this case, it is that, to the characters, Judith played both the role of a child of light and of darkness. I think this is why I struggle to fully understand to Qumran community because in my eyes no one person is a child of light or of darkness. Different people see the same person in different ways and one person can have attributes of both sides. To me it would be very hard to put a label on someone before you know them and even then you can never fully classify a person into just one category.
