Today we arrived in Rhodes. Rhodes is much more how I expected our time in Greece to be; right on the edge of the Mediterranean, surrounded by people and languages from all over the world, the balance between the old world and the new.
I am currently sitting on the patio of our hotel room, looking at the reflection of the moon on the surface of the Mediterranean. It’s simply stunning, a white swath cutting through the blackness of water and sky. The motion of the water is only visible in this lighted path, and as the waves break and lap on the shore. There are some lights from ships in the distance, and perhaps one pale light on the shore of distant (yet nearby) Turkey. The moon is cutting through the fog and the clouds, whole and luminescent in its apparent perfection. If it weren’t for the lights of the ships in the distance, one would have no point of reference for the reaches of the horizon. It’s a beautiful night in Rhodes; the lights of the city are coming on while the light of the moon wanes on the sea.
