I've always admired Daniel for his spirit and tenacity. Though we've determined that they are court tales, the meaning of Daniel's stories are quite clear. Never compromise who you are. His devotion to God and worship amaze me and inspire me for my life.
While visiting the monastery, I came upon this little chapel area and I felt that something more. This place is an obvious haven for people who did not want to compromise their identity. They found a refuge in God and in contemplating His works, and and worshiping Him. This monastery allows them to live in a way that doesn't pressure them to conform to a lifestyle they do not want. In a world where power runs around like a mad man, I find it very comforting to be reminded of the fact that there are places in which we all can find solace and maintain who we are without the imminent threat of someone trying to take it from us.
Though it may seem odd that I say someone has the ability to take our identity, but our class is finding out that the Israelite faced this quite often. When a person/power comes in to force their idea of identity on you, thoughts become jumbled and your center of being becomes thrown off. It was people like Daniel and Judith who refused to compromise that helped the Israelites to get back on track, and it is people like Daniel and Judith that give the world hope when they don't have the reminders of solace present in their lives. I am fortunate to have both.
