Dan 1: 5-21 "You are what you eat."
As my pals as I dined in Plaka this evening, we discovered something about this country. They really do not compromise about their food and drink. AT ALL. When they say you will drink wine, you will drink wine. As much of it as you care to drink, for free. Connecting this to the story of Daniel wasn't that difficult for me as I sat drinking my glass of wine and eating my shrimp (which, by the way, I did not see until they and the bill arrived at the table were a) 22 Euro oops blown budget for today and b) completely whole, head and eyes staring back at you included, something we are NOT used to in the States). In the court of Nebudchadnezzar, Daniel, Shedrach, Mesrach and Abednego were not willing to give up their traditions in the ways of food/ drink because of their nationalistic ties. As I sat listening to the traditional music being played by, well, traditional Greeks, I couldn't help but think of their ties to their national cusine and mine as a member of a huge Italian American family. Now my photo is of wine, of course, but wine, too was integral in the tradition of the Old Testament. And obviously in the Greek culture as well. As we were eating the band even started playing one of the Greek tunes from one of my favorite movies "Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants". The "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" references among my classmates and I are always pretty priceless as well. You wanna talk nationalisitic ties and unwillingness to compromise, you talk Toula's family in that movie! All in all, it was another fabulous evening strolling beneath the Acropolis with friends learning about Greek culture, food, music and art at the Acropolis museum.
