Everyone has a story. If you take an interest in people watching, you sometimes try to figure out what it is about people that makes them who they are. If you're brave enough, you might strike up a conversation with a total stranger. Today I tried to overcome the fact that I know very little Greek and just tried to talk to people. This morning I met Julia who works in a jewelry store. Julia is my age, and Albanian. We chatted for some time and she told me of how she dreams of leaving Athens and go to a university in New York to study business. She says her biggest obstacle is convincing her father to let go. She is the only child. While I was reading at a cafe this afternoon I met a man named, Joseph. At first sight you may not believe that this man playing accordian on the streets of Athens has a wife and three daughters. He speaks fluent English and plays the violin. He once had a produce stand, but is on a streak of bad luck with the economic downturn as of late. Everyone has a story. If you're able to scratch the surface with the ones you meet, you'll discover as I did today that people in this country are similar in many ways to people at home. They have dreams and they have struggles just like the rest of us.
