Remember the Titans

Who, or what, are the Titans, and why should we remember them?

Are they a legendary football team, both in real life and on the big screen? Are they the mythical gods and goddesses who were worshipped by the ancient Greeks? Or are they something else entirely? All three, perhaps?

When I think of the word 'titan' I think of something monstrously huge, something massive, overpowering and unconquerable. Epic, incredible, and great. There's a reason people back in 1912 named the Titanic "Titanic". In the end the Titanic was conquered, but it's really the thought that counts - people looked at the ship (when it was still buoyant) and saw something that inspired an extraordinary amount of awe and wonder. That, I think, is what titans do. A titan is something that inspires and overwhelms. It makes you feel puny and pathetic in comparison. But that still doesn't answer my question... who, or what, are the Titans? And why should I remember them?

We know the Titans are a football team. They are also the original gods that ruled the world before the Olympians defeated them and took over (and yes, the only reason I know this is because I read Percy Jackson). But the Titans are also those moments and experiences that define our lives. They are events of titanic proportions, if you will, that help shape our lives and mold our beliefs. My time here in Greece is certainly one of those events. I think my time at PLU in general is also a life experience I will always cherish and never forget. In a way, I will always remember the Titans in my own life. I must remember them because without them I would not be half the person I am today. I will remember them because forgetting them would result in the loss of part of my identity. Remember the Titans. I will always remember the Titans.
