This evening, I had the pleasure of meeting of meeting Nelli the Greek, my first Greek friend, if you can call her that. Canela, which means Cinnamon in Greek (and Spanish!) is her real name. You see, it all started when we inquired about Fredittos (sp?). Hannah, the brave soul that she is, decided she was going to order one, so when she ordered it from Nelli, I asked her what, exactly, a Freditto was. From then on, it was destined we’d be friends.
Turns out, Nelli is a big Kurt Cobain fan and when she found out we were from Seattle, she told us she loved him. I told her I was from his hometown and she thought about it for a second and anxiously replied, “Aberdeen!” – we had a moment. And the rest of the night we shared little moments. By the time we were leaving I mentioned if she ever came to the states and was in Seattle to let me know, and she asked for my name. I shared it with her, happy that she had asked and thankful that we were able to get to know each other, even if it was just briefly, and she teased me for taking forever to write out my email address.
I know it seems ridiculous and silly and very insignificant, but this was the best way I could have asked to spend our last evening. She wanted to recommend places for us to go, and wasn’t afraid to laugh with us and make fun of us. It was wonderful to spend the evening with good friends in the cafĂ©, sharing laughs and quietly chatting.
The blog title today was, “Beware of Greeks bearing gifts” and tonight, I happily accept the gift of kindness and friendship from a Greek.
