Well, after a stressful day filled with boarding pass mishaps, security checkpoints, and long plane rides, our group has finally arrived in Athens. After spending more than 13 hours on airplanes, the bus ride from the airport to our apartments at the College Year in Athens was rather refreshing. As I stared out the window, enthralled by the beatuiful countryside as we made our way into the city center, I tried to compare Athens to other cities I have visited in the past. Despite my efforts, nothing in my mind could come close to the sights before me. The rolling hills, the whitewashed buildings, the ancient ruins intermixed with busy city streets - how could anything compare to this? After just this brief glimpse, Athens stands alone in my mind.
Tonight we were able to spend some time exploring the city of Athens. What struck me the most during this brief expedition was the dichotomy between old and new, ancient and hip. Not only do these different ends of the spectrum coexist within Athens, but they manage to blend together to create something beautiful.
