Yesterday we set out on on our trip to Greece, and after all of the 14 hours of flights, a short layover, and one lost bag within the group we successfully made it to Athens. As we got out into the charter bus to get to our apartments it became very clear that Athens is a different city even compared with cities like Seattle back home. The city of Athens if I had to describe it is if West Seattle suburbs met downtown Seattle and had a child. The city is like a never ending outdoor mall with all of the culture you would expect from Athens and then some. You have businesses on the street and apartments above them on almost every building. There are so many people that you cannot find a place to yourself, and is by far the busiest city I have ever been in. Driving there is also hectic, but looks fun and adventurous. Modes of transportation include small cars, motorcycles, and scooters/mopeds that propel the people into their daily lives as well as their social life (foot traffic is also very heavy). You can't forget that you are treading through the birthplace of the modern world; there are ancient churches, buildings, and sculptures all around you. The spectacles are literally breathtaking. We stared into the shadow of the Parthenon and the ancient Olympic stadium. Behind the city and culture of the people lies in some respects the culture and ingenuity of mankind and the world.
