First Impressions

A day that began nearly 30 hours ago in Parkland, Washington is finally coming to a close in the incredible Athens, Greece. I'm still trying to absorb the fact that right now I am sitting in the ancient heart of Western civilization. After a non-stop day of flights, airport security and lugging around my giant backpack, the reality of my situation has yet to sink in. Our first day in Athens was incredible. After retrieving our bags, we made the short drive into the city - and what a drive it was! Greece is absolutely stunning with its green hills and red-roofed houses. The drive into Athens took us past the U.S. Embassy, the Greek Parliament, and the original Olympic stadium. We even caught a glimpse of the Acropolis from the highway. After a few hours to relax and freshen up in our new home, we hit the streets of Athens to pick up groceries and, of course, explore! On this three hour walking tour, we made it to the Acropolis and the surrounding neighborhoods. My first impression of the city is that it is massive, exciting and extremely busy. So far the people have been very kind and patient with our group. The citizens of Athens are lively and noisy, and it's clear they are the reason the city possesses so much character and excitement. Athens, I can't wait to get to know you more in the weeks ahead!
