Glad I don't have to sail to another island for this...

For our first evening in Athens we walked the promenade around the Acropolis and Parthenon. It was a quiet leisurely stroll with many passing young lovers and elderly couples. Some walked along beside us holding hands and others sat along the walls admiring the view of the ruins. Everywhere you could see people going from stand to stand browsing trinkets and bargaining with souvenir sellers while stopping along the way to grab a shwarma sandwich or take a break to sip some coffee. It was a romanticly lit place filled with cafes and restaurants decorated with rich colorful table clothes, wicker and steel seating, draping string lights, and plush lounge chairs where many sat to enjoy their evening meal. Much of the bustling outdoor crowd were young people enjoying each others company. It was a wonderful place to do so! We stopped at historic restaurant in the plaza to sample their gyros. Apparently, real gyros have fried potatoes to go along with the lamb, cucumber sauce, garnish, and warm pita bread. It added another level of texture and depth of starchy flavor that I've never had in a gyro. Suffice it to say, it hit the spot quite nicely after our long trip over the Atlantic. We strolled around for several hours taking our time in the plaza and stopping by to glance at the churches and ruins and such. It was fulfilling first night with wonderful company and great food!
