land of the lost

It is amazing to think, just a bit over 6 years ago, Athens held the Olympics the first time since 1896. They built extravagant complexes to house the competition of countries from all over the world and took pride in having the games at ‘home’. But today, on our free day when 6 of us adventured on the metro to go see these grand stadiums and complexes, we where not amazed at their grandeur and their beauty, but amazed that Athens had nothing to do with them anymore. They stood their, practically deserted and empty. It was like being Will Smith in “I am Legend” as we walked all over the complexes. There was a few places fenced off so we couldn’t go and see everything. But from behind the gates, it too looked as vacant and lonely as the rest of the place. There was only a few people there swimming in the pool, but other than that, it was completely deserted. I really couldn’t believe that there had been so much money put into this place, and now it sits there while nature takes back over. Rust and vegetation are taking over the once marvelously constructed buildings, and the huge squares that once held so many visitors and athletes alike now stood empty. The signs, maps, and outer building, now were covered in graffiti, stood vacantly without any reasoning for their existence. It was almost sad in a way to see something that could be still so grand and amazing so rundown and devastated. The sights that once I peered at on the TV while watching the games, now stood in front of me without the spectacular extravagance I was hoping to get to see in person. It was sad, it was a bit disappointing, but it is also real life. The good times in Athens are fading and the stadium, that once represented the greatness of Athens is too now fading fast. Maybe one day, Athens and the stadium, together, will be back shinning bright, but until then they will just sit await the day for redemption.
