Today was our last day on the beautiful island of Rhodes. We spent this last precious day visiting two Orthodox churches, stopping by the water and touring the city of Lindos. Narrating this adventure was our very own Rhodes expert and tour guide "Jimmy" the Greek.
Seeing the differences between the Greek Orthodox churches in their Byzantine style and
the former glory of the Lindos Acropolis (where the temple of Athena once stood) helped to bring the spacial differences of Pagan and monotheist religious practice into better light.
After leaving Lindos and the churches behind our
group stopped by Kallithea, a once popular cold springs and health retreat known for its healing waters and treatments that has since been destroyed by war, dried up, and rebuilt. It was fascinating to see the time and resources that have been put into rebuilding this destination for the sake of preserving history.
A few members of the group decided to go for a swim at Kallithea. However, since it was a bit chilly out and there was no proper beach, merely a drop off from the pavement, I chose not to join them.
After returning to the hotel I realized that today was probably my last opportunity to swim in the Mediterranean before heading home in about a day. So I put on a tank top and the shorts I had scoured Rhodes for last night and headed for the beach with a couple others drawn to the water. Leaving Rhodes, I can officially say that I swam in the sea, even if only for a short time.
