"It is not for you to make the Lord our God give surety for his plans. "God is not man that he should be moved by threats, nor human, that he may be given an ultimatum." -- Judith 8:16 |
"Tides may ebb, and tides may flow, yet steady stays the sea" -- Alain Boublil
Mother Nature is nothing if not uncompromising. Were humans to spontaneously disappear from the earth, the planet would not miss us. According to one widely referenced chart (the validity of which I have neither the time nor patience to corroborate), within only 3 months of our disappearing, the air and light pollution would disappear as well, and endangered species would recover. In 50-100 years, the cities would be overtaken by flora, replacing our concrete jungles with jungled concrete. In 50,000 years -- the blink of an eye in geologic time -- humanity's tenure on this planet would be remembered solely by a few archaeological remains.
Replace "God' in the Judith quote with "Nature," and its eternal progression is evident. No matter what we may do on this planet, the universe continues. So long as we avoid the destruction of the globe itself, Nature finds a way, and pushes through.
