Today was a free day for our sizeable group of young travellers. We were able to go off on our own to explore Athens and see anything that wasn't on our class itinerary but was on our list of sights to see.
I and five of my classmates chose to visit the new Olympic Stadium that was consructed for the 2004 Olympics here in Athens. We bought day passes for the metro and managed to decipher the map of the metro lines. After sidestepping an interruption in the line, we made it to the Stadium.
While there was a definite lack of population at the stadium, giving the area the feeling of a zombie apacolypse, the size of the compound and the number of buildings and swimming pools was astounding. Our group was able to go inside one of the buildings and see one of the pools where people were working out. We were also able to get up close to the outdoor pool and live our own Olympic fantasy (brought to you by Coca-Cola Light).
After leaving the Stadium, we took the metro back through Athens and towards the ocean. There we ate dinner at a restaurant with a beautiful view of a marina. Then we took the tram a little ways down the coast to a cafe where a few of us had eaten dessert last night. And yes, the dessert was soooo amazing that we had to go back for seconds!
