Today, our class arrived on the island of Rhodes at around 11am Greece time, and what a magnificent island it is. The water is gorgeous and the landscape is absolutely breath taking. Although the gang and i got off to a rough start (we were pulled into a terrible death trap of an eatery that completely raped us of our pride and dignity) i have a feeling things will all turn out for the better.
Language is vital to any surviving community throughout the world. What my question is, why is America so dead set on English, and why has English become a primary second language nationwide? In my adventure throughout Greece, i have done my best to communicate suing the simplest of Greek phrases that i know. In comparison, the Greeks that i have encountered have shown me the up most respect just for attempting to speak Greek, and most have know enough English dialect that we can communicate on a somewhat clear basis. Where in America, most people (and even i have had my moments) can't stand that foreigners can not speak English. This also got me to asking, does Turkey show that same courtesy to Americans as the Greeks do? In so many stories i have heard that Greeks and are exactly the same people, but at same time completely opposite of one another. Even though Turkey is just across the water, would they show the same compassion to me if i attempted to speak the slightest bit of Turkish? These are just ideas that i plan on turning into a wonderful paper, along with my experiences with the Greek people while on my adventures. I feel it has great potential and has the capability to turn out very well.
After our little adventure with the eatery we were given a short and sweet presentation about the island of Rhodes from Ivory, Ted, Katie, Kim and Eric, that gave us a short description of what we will be seeing while on Rhodes. After this presentation, Dr. Finitsis told us that we would go for a walk as a class , but that we should also be thinking of our papers. And this got me thinking of an idea i have brought up in previous blog posts that i really want to role with for my paper. That being language.
