Well I can really see it from my hotel balcony…
After about a 40 minute flight from Athens, we touched down in Rhodes and went to our hotel located right across the street form the Mediterranean sea. Let’s just say that if it where the busy tourist season, there would be no way that we would be able to stay here. The hotel is big, grand, and with in walking distance of pretty much everything on this side of the island. Our rooms have a view of views, the sandy beach in front of us and the ocean for as far as the eye can see.
Today, however, the first impression of Rhodes wasn’t the best. There was a few hours to kill before we met as a class to get a mini tour of Rhodes, so 7 of us decided to adventure into the city and find something to eat. Well, the adventure didn’t end well. We decided to walk into Old Town because the guide book said that is where all of the best restaurants are, but as we got there, we soon found out first hand that this tourist driven island becomes a faint ghost of itself when it is not the right time of year.
After wondering through the city that is surrounded by walls form the Mid Evil times, we stopped being picky about where we wanted to eat and just looked for a place that was open and serving food. The one and only place we stumbled upon looked very promising. The building appeared to be from the same era of the construction of the walls and the décor inside was equally as awesome, prices were a little steep but its an island town, isn’t that what is to be expected. Well, long story short, the prices were high, the food was awful, and we could only put this as a notch on our belt and a story that we could look back on and laugh. While right now, the wounds are still to sore to laugh at, in all due time, it will be a good story and at least I can say we had a good time blowing a lot of money on food, that if we were to take a different turn in the roads, we could have eaten like kings and queens. If I wasn’t with the people I was with, if I wasn’t just happy to be in Rhodes, and if I just living in the moment and taking it all in, this could have given Rhodes a bad taste in my mouth, kind of like the food, but since I wasn’t ready to give in that easy, Rhodes will have to put up a much bigger fight for me to flee.
